Formal pool and rill complex upgrade

A formal complex of pools and rills had started to fail, the clients were battling with constant algae issues and were simply not getting the enjoyment one would expect from a water feature.

We began to transform the defunct system into a beautiful Aquascape ecosystem with a rather unique formal feel. The clients briefed us to add a twist of nature to the formal feel of this south facing terrace garden that overlooked the wonderful rolling Somerset hills.

Formal Wildlife Rill

An oversized constructed wetland was created to ensure there would be ample surface area for bacteria colonies to thrive and keep the water quality and clarity at our desired level - pristine! Flowing down the rill from the wetland you enter one of the narrow rill sections, pushed along by various circulation jets until the flow slows and enters out into the middle pool section.

This middle section has been dubbed the lily pool, here we have some small water lilies which will cover the surface, providing shelter for animals as well as bloom for many years to come.

Leaving the lily pool and entering another rill section before opening out into the ecosystem pond. Accent boulders were placed throughout increasing in numbers as you approach the ecosystem pond. These boulders along with a higher density of aquatic planting were sure to make for a more natural feel.

The rills are lined with Dutch Iris, these grade in colour from pure ice whites at the wetland end, through to whites-mauve before becoming solid purple and ending at the ecosystem pond with an almost black flower. We reflected this planting theme throughout the feature by adding specimen plants such as wonderful white flowering Zantedeschia aethiopica at the wetland end and to contrast, the superb Iris louisiana ‘Black Gamecock’ at the pond end.
